Flag Fen Announces Donation from The Peter Boizot Foundation
A £10,000 donation has been made by Peter Boizot, through his Foundation, to Fenland Archaeological Trust. This is to kickstart a half a million pound project to build an Archaeological Resource Centre on the Flag Fen site, at the edge of Fengate in Peterborough.
An announcement of the funding was made at the annual Members Day, held at Flag Fen on Saturday 29th July. Mr Boizot was there himself and commented on beauty of the site as well as its importance to Peterborough, stating that he was proud to be able to offer support. He encouraged everyone present to raise the profile of the site as much as possible.
The Archaeological Resource Centre will provide much needed facilities to allow the material excavated at Flag Fen to be analysed as well as providing work units for archaeological consultants to work in purpose-built facilities. With a high level of development due to take place in Peterborough in the near future, this facility will be in demand. There will also be opportunities for training through workshops and training digs.
Mr Boizot, who owns the Great Northern Hotel, has supported the Fenland Archaeological Trust through the Peter Boizot Foundation for a number of years. In addition to the recent £10,000 donation, Mr Boizot has donated £25,000 over the past 10 years to fund excavations at the site. The foundation was established to support worthwhile causes in and around Peterborough and the archaeological trust is regarded in high esteem by Mr Boizot.
Georgia Butters, General Manager at Flag Fen says “It’s fantastic that we are receiving these funds to enable us to proceed with this project. There is still a long way to go, but when we get planning permission we will have a viable project to market to potential funders. This will be a wonderful research facility providing numerous opportunities for Peterborough.”
