Herb Garden
The Roman Herb garden at Flag Fen has been laid out in a traditional
Roman Manner. The Romans would have used all of the plants, which
are identified by their common and botanical names.

Trees
and Shrubs
We know a great deal about the plants that were growing at Flag Fen
from studying seeds and pollen preserved in the peat around the ancient
timbers.
The scientist responsible for this research is
Dr. Rob
Scaife and he has advised Flag Fen closely in choices of
suitable trees and shrubs.
Abundant evidence has been found for common alder, willows, ash, oak and
shrubs such as guelder rose, avoiding certain trees, such
as oak, because of their deep tap roots, which might damage any archaeological
remains.
The dykesides and mere were planted with flag iris (after
which Flag Fen was named) and great reedmace, but we have again been
forced to avoid the common reed, because of its damaging roots.
