About

What this publication is, and what it is not

flagfen.com is an independent publication about the European Bronze Age, written from the material: objects, timbers, moulds, and the ground they came out of.

It is not a museum, an archaeological site, a trust or a visitor attraction, and it does not speak for any of them. It carries no visiting information of any kind. If you are looking for a place to go, this is not that.

How an entry is written

Every entry separates the record from the interpretation and says which is which. The record is what was found, where, and in what condition. The interpretation is what people have argued it means. Where the dating or the reading is contested, the entry says so rather than picking a side and presenting it as settled.

Numbers are given as ranges where the underlying evidence is a range. A single analysis of a single object is not treated as a rule, and no find, date or provenance is invented to make a point land.

Photographs

Photographs are real and individually credited beneath each caption. Some show excavated originals; some show modern reconstruction work, experimental casting, or a comparable structure built for other reasons. The caption says which. Captions carry information the picture cannot; the credit sits under them, smaller and quieter.

Structure

Six sections, 24 entries. Everything is reachable from the header, and everything is also listed on the register in one table, without a dropdown.
